                  Chemists' Cod

I. Forward

In the interaction of people, besides the rule of law, ethical and moral norms bring forth in human persons a deeper sense of responsibility and honor. Such norms insure honesty, fairness and mutual respect, thus naturally bringing about social order, harmony and the benefits of happiness. Because of the rapid development of science and technology, there are numerous threats to society and the environment with far reaching consequences. For these reasons, the scientific and technological community must face the consequences for scientific and technological ethics. The Chinese Chemical Society in Taipei has prepared the Chemists' Code in the hope that colleagues in the chemistry community can strictly implement this conviction and spirit, so as to advance the role and professional responsibility of chemists, offering themselves for the nation and society, to bring about the true welfare of all peoples.

II. Professional Knowledge and Development

  1. Chemists should take responsibility for their profession and seek professional excellence.
  2. Chemists have the responsibility to maintain a careful attitude and faithfulness to principles, to respect experimental results, not to plagiarize or fabricate.
  3. When making professional evaluations, chemists have the responsibility to maintain a fair and objective stance, preserve confidentiality and, when appropriate, absence oneself from proceedings.

III. Work ethics

  1. Employers should provide employees with a reasonable and safe work environment, be concerned for their welfare and respect their professionalism.

  3. Those working in business and as consultants, must adhere to the principles of faithfulness and professionalism, preserve confidentiality and provide appropriate advice to clients.
  4. Teachers should diligently and responsibly carry out their duties in teaching, research, counseling and service. They should especially help students to develop attitudes of diligent study and proper activity, helping them to upgrade their professional knowledge and technique. Teachers should provide a safe research environment and respect students’ rights and welfare.
  5. Researchers should properly deal with and utilize research data and results. They should respect the intellectual property of others.
  6. Students should respect their teachers and their teachings. They should continuously and diligently pursue professional knowledge and technique, and cultivate a wholesome ethic and attitude to work.
  7. There should be mutual respect among colleagues and students, openness to the exchange of opinions, a collegial spirit of cooperation and study. The contributions of others should be properly respected.

IV. Responsibility to society and the environment

  • There should be a genuine concern for the equitable development and welfare of humanity and of society.
  • The quality of the environment should be protected; pollution should be avoided.
  • One should join societal activities with a spirit of concern. When expressingopinions openly on matters of concern to society, it should be done in accord with professional norms. All comments should be objective and sincere.

V. Members of the Chinese Chemical Society in Taipei should diligently observe the “Chemists' Code” both in content and in spirit. If a member would openly disobey the code, the board of directors may decide to terminate the qualifications of the member or deal with the matter in accord with the bylaws of the society.
